Best Places to Surf in the USA

Because of its great coastline and wide access to both oceans (Pacific and Atlantic) the US is one of the most popular countries providing optimal conditions for surfing. Sun, air, sand and waves make for a killer combination. Beaches in the US offer different levels of difficulty, from beginners all the way to experts, the vast coast area provides something for everyone.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular places to surf in the US:

Sebastian Inlet, Florida

The Sebastian Inlet in Florida has a beautiful beach known for its small to medium sized waves. The waves range from 4 feet all the way up to 10 feet and as you move around from one area to another you will see this variation taking place. The beach is great and the waters can be rather warm, the average temperature remains around the 80s (Fahrenheit of course). This is a great place for beginners and intermediate surfers.

Black’s Beach, California

This beach is located in San Diego and is very unique because of the high cliffs and optimal surfing conditions, especially towards the southern area of the beach, Black’s only covers about 2 miles. Those who used to visit this beach before 1999 may remember that many people used to walk around completely nude, however, ever since then things have changed and nudity is now prohibited. Getting back to surfing, the height of the waves at Black’s Beach vary as you move from the northern part of the beach to the southern part.

Malibu Beach

Amongst the best places for surfing enthusiasts who want to learn how to surf is Malibu Beach. Malibu is definitely a prime surfing location. Malibu offers perfect conditions for beginners to learn how to surf, the waves are not extremely high and in most places vary between 4 feet and 6 feet. The conditions may vary according to the weather of course, but for the most part the waves will not grow very big.

Cocoa Beach, Florida

The average temperature at Cocoa Beach varies from the mid 70s all the way up to the high 80s so the weather in this area can be classified as subtropical which is a great surfing combination. Cocoa produces medium sized waves which offer a bit more of a challenge to surfers who already know the basics but because of their size they are not considered dangerous. This is also the place which is called home by the six-time world champion Kelley Slater.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

There are several spots around this area, which are excellent for surfing, mainly because the continental shelf at the Cape tends to be very steep which allows waves from the Atlantic Ocean to reach the shore line with a bit more force, this makes the conditions perfect for those surfers who have more experience under their belts. Those who are still learning would be advised to stick to the coastal area southward of South Carolina because the continental shelf becomes wider which diffuses the strength of the incoming waves. Some good spots for surfing are: Wrightsville Beach (towards the south), Rodanthe, etc.

Waikiki, Hawaii

To conclude the list we need to mention of the most famous, challenging surfing locations in the US and in the world, Waikiki. This beach provides excellent waves for professional and experiences surfers; they are normally around 20 feet but can grow a lot high than that so as you can tell this is nit a place where people come to learn how to surf. Many national and international tournaments are held and Waikiki because o the perfect natural conditions that the island provides. The surfing conditions are great throughout the year, however, it is said that between May and September is when the best wave riding conditions are present.
